Sneak Peek at Connecting With Kids in a Disconnected World: The Ultimate Parenting Toolkit: Part 1

Which kind of parent are you – a mom who has plenty of time to hunt around for ways to fix your mother-daughter relationship? Or a mom, who wants help, but has too much on her plate?

Your search is over because my next parenting course, Connecting With Kids in a Disconnected World: The Ultimate Parenting Toolkit, comes out in a few months.

How would you like a Sneak Peek? Since this month’s theme is Food Focus, I’ve chosen the final video from Busting Those Parenting Myths, and split it into three parts.

Sneak Peek to Connecting With Kids in a Disconnected World: The Ultimate Parenting Toolkit: Part 1

I’ve saved Health for my last Non-Negotiable. Since it’s such an emotional topic, it gets its own video. This is the time to call upon your inner Ref so you can approach this topic objectively, and without self-criticism. I’m warning you now that if anything I say makes you feel guilty, you must IMMEDIATELY kick that INAPPROPRIATE guilt to the curb. It will interfere with your objectivity, and, it will interfere with this process.

There’s no room for guilt here.

What’s the final myth we’re going to bust today? Fast food chains would have you believing otherwise, but ALL FOODS ARE NOT CREATED EQUAL.

This is not a lecture about diets. It’s a conversation about safe nutritional practices.

Our bodies are biologically hardwired to go after sugar. We don’t have a shut off switch when it comes to sweets. We do, however, have a shut off switch for protein, fat and veggies. There are many theories as to why, but the bottom line is… it’s true.

Think about your last holiday feast. Everyone ate until they couldn’t take another bite, and then, someone announced that dessert was ready. Miraculously, your body lost its stuffed feeling, and welcomed the additional treats.

See? No shutoff switch for sugar.

On top of that, our struggles with maintaining healthy nutrition are intentionally sabotaged by the fast food industry. Their goal is to make you come back for more. They test and retest their products until they find the perfect combination of chemicals that will bypass your shutoff switch, so you’ll keep consuming their stuff.

So, if you’ve been suckered in by the constant media hype (like everyone else), and the glorious convenience of fast foods, don’t you dare waste your energy on feeling guilty!

You were manipulated. At the time, if you had had the knowledge, and the time, and the energy, you would’ve done it differently. This is a guilt-free space, so forgive yourself! Let your Inner Ref objectively look at the situation, and help you make a better plan going forward.

Here’s your starter list of physical and emotional symptoms typically experienced by kids. They’re created by a whole host of things, including:

  • external pressures
  • self-inflicted internal pressures
  • too many obligations and too little time
  • guilt
  • deadlines
  • grades and on and on and on.

You’ll find this list in the workbook, and in the video notes, but for now, why don’t you pause the video for a moment and read through it.

Count up the symptoms your child experienced last school year, or even last month.

Then, come back and we’ll explore it.

If you got teens or tweens, you got adolescent angst. For some kids, that angst creates daily symptoms, but your poor kids have to slog through anyway.

Can you relate to anything on this list of symptoms (which I pulled out of my book, “How To Keep Your Daughter From Slamming The Door”)? Sadly, in this day and age, everything on this list basically characterizes the tween and teen experience, whether your kids are going through it themselves, or they’re watching their friends and classmates trying to cope.

These are the physical signs of internal distress. The source of that distress can be difficult to pinpoint. Anything on this list can ruin your child’s day, not to mention, worrying about it happening again messes with their self-confidence, self-concept, and self-worth.

My first point here is that these are your warning bells telling you things have gone too far for your child.

Here’s a scary thought. What do you think next year will look like for your child if the causes of these stress symptoms continue?

My second point is about the asterisks next to some of the symptoms. Every marked symptom can be attributed to ingesting chemicals, like sulfites, monosodium glutamate or MSG, and the like. How does you child get these chemicals? They’re in the food coloring and food additives your kids consume in fast foods and snack foods, and they’re marketed to your kids.

That’s the good news… and the bad news.
