Boost Your Relationship with Earth Day 2022: Parenting Advice for Awesome Moms

If you didn’t get to capitalize on last month’s Earth Hour, you still have time to take advantage of April’s Earth Day 2022 and Earth Week 2022. I’m telling you, they make for great Conversation Starters.

Do you remember the days when the air was so polluted, it settled like a dark shroud around the cities? Or, when the lakes and rivers were so polluted that if you fell in a swallowed some water, you went to the hospital? I do. If you don’t, you have regular people to thank.

April 22nd is Earth Day, and your kids should understand what that means, and how ordinary people, like you and me, made a huge difference.

During uncertain times, it’s important to orient our children to inherent power they have as a people. Encourage conversations about how to make a difference in the world. It moves the focus away from things they cannot control. What better way to help your children feel more settled inside (something everybody needs in this day and age)?

Take a moment to share this 1-minute video. It shows what the United States was like before the Earth Day Protests convinced politicians to pass laws to protect our environment… and the people.

Then share this 2-minute video with your kids. It describes the protests that marked the very first Earth Day, and it can lead into an excellent open-ended discussion.

Do your kids regularly reject your advances? Try sticking your head in their room and saying something like this:

“I found these 2 interesting videos online I want to share with the family. It will literally take less than 5 minutes. Do you want to come sit with us and watch it, or do you want me to just show it to you separately?” (Never ask a question that requires a Yes/No Response.)

If you get a non-committal answer (like “Whatever”), show the videos right then. When you are done, ask a quick question, like, “How do you think [sibling] will react?” or, “How do you think [best friend] will react?”

Get your answer, and then bounce right out of there, leaving your kid in the wake of a pleasant interaction.

Just like a few voices grew to a global Earth Day movement, similar positive growth will germinate from these small constructive interactions with your tween/teen.

Happy Earth Day! Use it wisely.

Hugs!
